Port Māpua Maritime Museum

The Port Māpua Maritime Museum is located in the original Māpua wharf building on one of the few remaining historic working wharves in New Zealand. The wharf is the focal hub of the village.

At the Māpua museum you can walk through the rich maritime history of Nelson and its coastline of Tasman and Golden Bay and enjoy photos and video interactive displays along with maritime memorabilia detailing the wharf’s history.

The Port Māpua Maritime Museum pictorial presentations are made possible by having the best early photographic record of any settlement in New Zealand.

It illustrates the role early Maori played, the trading and passenger vessels of the region and the cargo they carried along with some of the unfortunate misadventures at sea, lighthouses, wharves, jetties and landings in the district.

The Museum is supported and managed by volunteers under the auspices of the Māpua Boat Club.
